TITLE: Heavy Equipment Operator / Commercial Pesticide Applicator
DEPARTMENT: District Supervisors, Walker County
JOB SUMMARY: This position operates heavy machinery in support of road construction, maintenance and repair projects
MAJOR DUTIES:
Meets with District Supervisors to plan daily work assignments, inspects vehicles and equipment; loads tools and supplies, checks truck for damage or other problems at end of day
Participates in the maintenance of shop building and facilities
Assists in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
Operates herbicide sprayer truck
Operates bulldozer, front end loader, motor grader, backhoe and other equipment; clears land for new streets; covers debris at dump sites; loads dirt and stumps onto dump truck; levels road beds; shapes back slopes; shapes driveways; mixes base course; spreads gravel
Maintains and constructs drainage and sewer systems; replaces and packs dirt; assists with cleaning storm sewers; removes trash and debris from under storm box lids and out of gutters, inlets and ditches; assists in the construction of concrete block/brick retaining walls; builds sinks and structures into the ground; oversees the replacement of landscaping
Maintains and repairs streets, curbs, sidewalks and related appurtenances; builds spillways; shores up existing structures; builds new streets and drive entrances; patches potholes; delivers asphalt to work sites; removes damaged asphalt; shovels, packs and prepares new asphalt for rolling operation; cleans up patch site after completion; restores curbing after asphalt work; mixes and pours cement; retrieves forms; repairs sidewalks; lays forms and spreads cement; levels cement
Maintains rights-of-way; operates bush hog and flail mower to cut grass
Assists with removal of brush/weeds and tree limbs; cuts and prunes trees
Hauls rubbish to dump and hauls waste material from job site; replaces signs, removes old signs, digs hole, mixes and pours cement, anchors new posts
Operates street sweeper
Performs other related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of equipment operations guidelines
Knowledge of county and department policies and procedures
Knowledge of the use and handling of pesticides as required by the State of Alabama Department of
Agriculture and Industries
Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair guidelines
Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment
Skill in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
Skill in oral and written communication
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The District Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department policies and procedures and equipment operation manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related equipment operation duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather may contribute to the complexity of the position
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in the construction, repair and maintenance of county road ways. Success in this position contributes to the safety of county roadways
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information; resolve problems and provide services
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, bending, crouching, stooping, standing or walking. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguish between shades of color
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic reading, writing and mathematical skills to do the job.
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years
Possession of an Alabama Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
Possession of Commercial Applicator Permit from the State of Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries with certification in categories listed but not limited to Ground Equipment and Right-of-Way Pest Control
