County Road Equipment Operator I

Postion Overview

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to perform semi-skilled operation of equipment used in the construction and maintenance of county roads, drainage ditches and bridges. Major work responsibilities may include: operating various types of equipment including highway tractors, rollers, and backhoes; performing various maintenance and construction related duties utilizing equipment; performing basic preventative maintenance on equipment; training on additional equipment as time permits; and performing related manual work. The County Road Equipment Operator I is distinguished from the County Road Equipment Operator II in that the CREO I typically performs less skilled equipment operations than the CREO II and operates equipment that does not require a CDL. Work is ordinarily performed under the supervision of and frequently inspected by the Road Maintenance Supervisor.

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and insurable driving record. A CDL may be required to perform the duties of the relief Operator on vehicles requiring a Commercial Driver’s License.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sun exposure, extreme heat and/or cold, rain, and lightning as well as exposure to ants, bees, insects, and poisonous plants such as poison ivy and poison oak. Equipment is operated on paved surfaces as well as across rough, uneven or rocky surfaces at the various work sites. Work requires some extended work hours, overtime, night, weekend, and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to bend, stoop, walk, and stand for periods of time as needed to perform manual labor duties.

Education Requirements

GED or high school diploma
