Under the general direction of the County Commission, the employee serves as the County’s Engineer and Director of the Highway Department. The County Engineer performs highly responsible and diversified professional engineering work, providing oversight, management,Under the general direction of the County Commission, the employee serves as the County Engineer and Director of the Highway Department. The County Engineer is responsible for a wide range of professional engineering tasks, providing oversight, management, and supervision of all department personnel and engineering operations.
Key responsibilities include establishing departmental goals and priorities in collaboration with the Commission, planning and implementing engineering projects, managing the departmental budget, overseeing personnel matters, and ensuring that all projects and functions comply with established standards and professional engineering requirements. The County Engineer also advises the County Commission on priorities, materials, equipment, and projects to be undertaken by the County.
Additionally, the County Engineer administers and manages projects that involve state or federal funding. This position requires considerable independent judgment in carrying out duties. It is classified as safety-sensitive and is subject to a pre-employment background check and random drug screenings. and supervision for all department personnel and engineering operations. Responsibilities range from establishing departmental goals and priorities in conjunction with the Commission, to planning and implementing engineering projects, managing the departmental budget and personnel matters, and ensuring that all projects and functions are performed in accordance with established standards and professional engineering requirements. This employee advises the County Commission on priorities, materials, equipment and/or projects to be undertaken by the County. The County Engineer administers and manages projects involving state or federal funds. The employee performs his duties utilizing considerable independent judgment.
